In an attempt to move away from meatworld blogging, I think I ought to give fandom discussion a go. That said, it's been brought to my attention before that I have some unusual choices or trends in character favorites. . .
For instance, in Harry Potter, my favorite character is Ron. I think he got completely shafted in, oh, 98% of the cannon books and movies. He's got untapped potential, and Rowlings likes to shuffle him offstage while the real events go down. Also, what the hell was up with the "Durrr, Brains" scene in OTP? My Ron figment would like to scream "LIBEL!" but that is his creator. One of my favorite Core'verse creations is Phantom, also known as the Core's Most Badass Carpet. He is v. badass, considering he's the best thief in the multiverse, but he is also a completely spineless uke when he's in love. He lets people walk all over him, manipulate him, use him, etc, because he's in love. And yet I maintain he is still badass. XD There are other examples, too, like Tasuki from Fushigi Yuugi (I am reminded that exists because I picked up Genbu Kaiden 1 today. Lo, it is good.)
My most recent spineless candidate is Daxter, the incurable coward, from Jak and Daxter. Mind, I love Jak just as much, since that boy could talk to Cloud about issues, but Daxter is more fun. He is small, orange, and furry snark almost 100% of the game. He's also next to useless.
So, why do I like the spineless sidekick characters? It might be because they have the most potential. They have possibilities that are completely ignored in cannon because the authors/writers/mangaka etc are focusing on the heroes and heroines. For example, I'm disappointed J.K. Rowling didn't do anything with the brains incident. (To say the least, my fic did.)
It seems to me at least two of my three latest fic ideas have to do with redeeming the spineless ones and finding their potential. >_< I hate the way that sounds, since it seems like that way lies the path to canoncharacter!Suedom, but that's what I like to do. I want to find ways for my interpretation of the character to /do/ something, even if it doesn't impact the main plot. . . .
Okay, the Jak and Daxter fic is inspired almost entirely by the mental image of Daxter singing "Andy You're a Star" by the Killers in the time-honored provocative rockstar fashion at Jak, but that's completely besides the point. (Daxter is the coward /and/ the horndog. He multitasks. And people say the heroes do all the work.)

Anyone else notice any archetypes they are particularily fond of without good reason?  (Flidget, I am onto your snarky old man fetish.  Hush, you. XD)
Nothing more to see here, move along.

*waves* Hi. I recently realized that I, um, seem to like psychopaths. Not villains, necessarily, just crazy mofos who are out to fuck some people's shit up. Of course, this is most likely just part of my long, long, long-standing obsession with morally ambiguous characters. I could most likely make up some BS about how this reflects my inner desires to disregard society's standards, but really, I think it's just 'cause they're kickass cool.
